Summary

Description

IMAGE INFO - Viewpoint is looking south from Bream Street at a position just east of Arden Street towards the 800m long "Figure Eight" at Coogee (part of the entertainment facilities owned by the Palace Aquarium managers). - I have dated the image to circa Dec 1910, since (a) The first substantial Coogee Surf Life Saving Club house was built in 1910 & is clearly visible here &, (b) The Figure Eight had already closed down by January 1912 & was demolished completely by Feb 1912. - The "Figure Eight" amusement ride was widely advertised & very popular for the first few years after it first opened in October 1907. However, waning economic conditions in the lead up to WW1 resulted in it being closed & demolished by February 1912. - An extract of an article titled "RIVAL SEASIDE RESORTS" in the Sydney Morning Herald dated 10 Oct 1907 (page 11) describes the "Figure Eight Railway" ride at Coogee thus: "Briefly described, this "spasm producer" is a varlety of the switch-back on a more complicated scale, and provides an undulating rush along cliff levels for a distance of half a mile. The management guarantees the safety of the four passengers in each of the eight motor-car-shaped trucks. At night over 1000 incandescent electric lights will Illuminate the track in such a manner that the trip will be made through an archway of light. After reaching the starting platform at an altitude of about 70ft or 80ft the cars travel In obedience to the laws of gravitation, and several times describe the figure 8." :0)
