Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, formerly known as Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera and Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, is a Motion simulator attraction located at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA. Opening with the park on June 7, 1990, the ride has since been through several rethemes and design changes.
History
The attraction originally opened on June 7, 1990, under the Hanna-Barbera theme. The ride was located inside soundstage 42, one of several buildings in the park that functioned as real movie soundstages. The ride was one of 2 simulators built for the park on opening day, the other being Back to the Future: The Ride.
On October 20, 2002, the ride closed down. It was a part of an initiative taken by the park to modernize and remove older rides to include ones of more relevant intellectual property.
Shortly before, in May 2002, it was announced that the ride would be rethemed to several different properties of the Nickelodeon network, more specifically, the 2001 movie Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.[1] The ride would contain other cartoons, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, and Rugrats. The new attraction would retain the ride system and building from the last ride.
In March 2011, this statement was released on Universal's FaceBook page regarding the attraction:
"On April 1, we will close Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast and immediately begin work on an all-new experience based on an amazing concept. The new attraction is just one of many exciting things planned for the next couple of years. Meanwhile, Boy Genius fans will be excited to know that the attraction will re-open for limited periods during the spring and summer before closing permanently on August 18."[2]
After the date, the ride would close and be remodeled to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, which would soft open on June 12, 2012,[3] and later would officially open on July 2 of the same year.[4]
