Carnival
More actions
Carnival (Japanese: カーニバル) was an independently operated game center located within the Big Egg City (now Tokyo Dome City) complex in Bunkyō, Tokyo, Japan.
History
Opening in December 1990, Carnival was one of the larger game centers in Japan and was one of Sega's main locations for test-operating arcade cabinets and larger facilities, including simulator attractions.
The venue continues to trade as a game center to this day, with Sega (later GiGO) eventually purchasing its operations in December 2011 and renaming the venue as Sega Tokyo Dome City (Japanese: セガ 東京ドームシティ). In January 2022, Sega completely sold its game center operations to Genda[1], who began a phased rebranding of all Sega game centers in Japan under the GiGO name, with this respective venue rebranding as GiGO Tokyo Dome City. The venue remains operational as of 2025.[2]
Attractions
As noted above, Carnival housed two of Sega's early attraction formats - CCD Cart and Cyber Dome, and was the first non-Sega-owned venue to operate R-360 cabinets.
In 1991, to celebrate its first anniversary, the venue test-operated the first working version of the AS-1 Motion Simulator for a month before it was sent back to Sega. It is unknown when the remaining attractions were removed.
