Screechin' Eagle was a wooden roller coaster located at LeSourdsville Lake Amusement Park in Middletown, Ohio, USA.
History
The ride originally opened at Moxahala Amusement Park in Zanesville, Ohio, USA in 1928. It closed in 1939 and was relocated to LeSourdsville Lake.
The ride opened at LeSourdsville Lake for previews on May 19, 1940, followed by a grand opening on May 25. It was originally known as Cyclone.[1][2] It was built at a cost of over $35,000.[3] The name was changed to Space Rocket in 1961 and then Screechin' Eagle in 1978.
New trains, which had previously operated on Wildcat at Elitch Gardens in Denver, Colorado, USA were installed on the ride. Computer-operated brakes and an automatic lap bar release was also installed.[4]
On January 6, 2000, it was announced that LeSourdsville Lake Amusement Park would not reopen for the 2000 season.[5] However, it reopened in 2002, along with Screechin' Eagle. The park ultimately closed later that year. Screechin' Eagle was left standing but not operating until it was demolished in August 2011. Parts of the track and cars were donated to the National Roller Coaster Museum.[6]
