Tornado is a wooden roller coaster located at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa, USA. It has been operating since 1978.
History
Construction of the attraction began on December 24, 1977. The coaster opened to the public on July 1, 1978, with a formal opening being held on July 8.[1]
American Coaster Enthusiasts declared the ride a roller coaster landmark and awarded Adventureland a plaque on August 17, 2024.[2]
Etymology
Tornado was named after a tornado which hit the park in 1974, delaying its opening.
Incident
In July 2006, an 11-year-old girl was injured on Tornado when she was hit in the head by a loose board.[3]
