In April 2021, it was announced that Gerstlauer had signed an agreement to construct a "record-breaking" roller coaster in the United States.[1]
Defiance at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park was announced on August 5, 2021 via an exclusive story in USA Today.[2] A groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 20.[3]
The first track pieces arrived in the spring of 2022.[4] Vertical construction had already started by May 2022.[5]
The final piece of track was installed in June 2022.[6]
Design
Unlike some other roller coasters with beyond-vertical drops, there will be no brakes during the drop. The coaster is claimed to have the "steepest drop in the Western U.S." at 102.3. While Cannibal at Lagoon has a steeper drop at 116 degrees, it has brakes during its drop.[2]
Trains
Single cars. Riders are arranged 4 across in 2 rows, for a total of 8 riders per car.
