Parc Spirou Provence is a theme park located in Monteux, France. The park opened in 2018 and uses famous characters from the Dupuis comics.
History
Parc Spirou Provence was first announced in 2013, with an opening date of 2015 and a budget of €36 million.[1]
The park was delayed a number of times, and each time news came out of the project the proposal was different. One of them included a GCI Wooden Coaster while another included a Zierer Thrill coaster, similar to Wicked at Lagoon. Ultimately, none of these coasters ended up in the final proposal, and construction started in 2017.
The park was inaugurated on 1 June 2018 and opened to the public on the 16 of June 2018 to negative reviews,[2] who criticized the small number of attraction, the lack of themed areas, the lack of a Water Ride and most importantly the lack of shade and greenery inside the park.[3]
In fact, during most of the season only 11 rides were open, including a trio of Zierer coasters, En Avant Seccotine, Wanted Dalton and Spirou Racing, but also two simulator type rides in Gaffe à Gaston and Mesozoik Island (Now known as Supergroom et les Dinozorgs). Because of these problems, only 120,000 peoples visited the new park this year, falling short of its 300,000 target.[4]
To fix these issues and improve the park, the park spent €15 million in 2019, to add 6 new rides, including 2 coasters, a playground and €850,000 worth of trees.[5]
The most notable new rides were the tallest Roller Ball in the world, Nid des Marsupilamis, the star shape Eviv Bulgroz, the drop tower Zombillenium Tower and the flume Lucky River.
These additions had a big impact on the attendance that rose to 280,000 visitors, approaching the original goal.[4]
The additions didn't stop in 2020, as the park spent €3 million[5] to add 3 flat rides, including Crash Blorks, an Air Race, as well as another playground, a new film in the Immersive Tunnel and plenty of general park improvements.
But the even with these additions the attendance did not increase because of the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2021 Parc Spirou Provence introduced 2 themed areas. While Lucky Town only consisted in the addition of facades and landscaping near the 2 Lucky Luke themed rides, the Marsu Jungle debuted with a new ride, Splash Piranha, a retheme of Spip Jumper into Palombie Secrète, and a tropical forest.[6] In order to bring these new additions to reality the park invested €3 millions.[7]
2022 saw the addition of a €3 millions new area themed to the Kid Paddle comics. It was comprised of Blorks Attack, a splash pad, a shop and a food outlet.[8]
