Switchback Railway was a wooden roller coaster previously located at Euclid Beach in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Design
Switchback railway consisted of two sets of parallel tracks. Riders would ascend a tower at one end of the course and board the ride vehicle. Gravity would propel the vehicle toward the opposing tower, but it would not have the momentum to reach its top. Riders would therefore have to exit the vehicle at the base of a hill before the tower, after which workmen would manually push the vehicle up to the tower. Riders would ascend the second tower and repeat the ride process in reverse, returning to the original tower. Riders originally ascended the towers via staircases, but these were later replaced with a Remo escalator, called the Escalader.[1]
