Freefall was an Intamin product. It predated the modern drop tower. It was superseded by Intamin's Giant Drop and Gyro Drop lines.
The first installation was at Six Flags Magic Mountain in 1982. According to Intamin, a total of fifteen Freefall rides were built.[1] However, Intamin lists only fourteen Feefalls on their reference list.
Ride experience
The Freefall has eight cars which run on a track, similar to a roller coaster. Each car sits four riders in a single row. At the beginning of the ride, the car rolls backwards out of the station and stops at the bottom of the tower. The car is then lifted directly upward, within the tower. Upon reaching the top of the 131 foot tall tower, the car moves forward onto the drop track outside the tower. The car is released and falls 60 feet vertically, then another 33 feet while levelling out.[2] Brakes bring the car to a halt, with riders now on their backs facing towards the sky. The track is switched, and the car is reverses backwards towards the station and tilted such that riders are in an upright position.
