The ride opened as Tumble Bug in 1927. In 1948, it was rethemed and renamed Turtle. The cars were replaced, and a sixth car added.

The ride underwent a $38,000 refurbishment in 1981, including a new track and rebuilt cars.[1]

On August 16, 2023, Kennywood announced that Turtle would close on August 20 for refurbishment. The ride was dismantled and the central foundation and structure were replaced.[2] The ride reopened in 2024.
