Banco Bozano Simonsen (40%)
Sega GameWorks (10%)
GameWorks Rio de Janeiro was a family entertainment center located in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, within the New York City Center Shopping complex. It operated under the GameWorks chain owned by Sega GameWorks, a joint-venture between Sega Corporation, Universal Studios, and DreamWorks SKG. The Rio venue operated under a partnership with Brazilian firm Grupo Multiplan and Banco Bozano Simonsen.
History
GameWorks opened in November 1999[1] as one of New York City Center's opening day attractions.[2]
As with GameWorks venues in the United States, it contained a restaurant, two bars, and various video games and arcade facilities. However, in contrast to these locations, the Rio venue also housed some rides and simulators commonly seen at Joypolis venues in Japan.
The venue was extremely popular within the Brazilian crowd, but the venue announced its closure at the end of December 2002 and, as such, closed at the end of February 2003.[3] This was following a contract dispute with Multiplan, the majority owner - who intended on wanting to remove the restaurant and only keep the video games and bars.
