Giant Wheel opened in 1972 in approximately the location where Millennium Force's station and queue line are now.
Between August 12 and September 2, 1972, disc jockey Mike Kelly set a new world record when he continuously rode Giant Wheel for 21 days, 3 hours, and 58 minutes. He rode in a specially-equipped cabin on the ride and remained on the attraction overnight with an air mattress-sleeping bag combination. Kelly was permitted 15 minutes off the wheel each day for hygienic purposes.
