Autopia is a Track Ride currently located at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, USA. Opening in 2000, this version of the ride is a remodel of an original opening day attraction in the Tomorrowland area of the park. It opened as part of the 1998 remodel of Tomorrowland.
History
In 2000, the original Tomorrowland Autopia and Fantasyland Autopia tracks were combined into one, large circuit alongside a new, giant station with a pre-show. Chevron was signed in as the initial sponsor[1], with its logo and references to it all over the attraction.
Originally, the two tracks had cars that resembled a Corvette Stingray,[2] but these were later replaced with cars that resemble 3 new models: a sports car, a Volkswagen Beetle, and a regular convertible. All of them had the same speeds and internal build.
In 2012, Chevron dropped out of their 13-year agreement, and did not renew. Nothing changed about the ride, except for the removal of logos and reference to the brand in ride scenes.[3][4]
In 2016, Honda took over as the sponsor for the ride. It introduced new scenes with the ASIMO robot included in them.[5]
In April 2024, it was announced that by 2026, the entirety of Autopia's fleet of cars would have electrically powered drivetrains instead of using gasoline for power.[6]
Design
Engines/Power
Originally, before 2016, the cars were powered by 286 cc (17.5 cu in) two-stroke engines by Kawasaki.
When Honda took over sponsorships for the ride, however, the engine was converted to have a 270 cc (16 cu in) Honda IGX270, a four-stroke gasoline engine that was quieter and made fewer emissions.
All of the vehicles are guided into place via a singular guiderail, which limits the turning radius of the cars.
The layout is a combination of 2 pre-existing rides into one to make one giant track. It opened to coincide with the 1998 refurbishment of Tomorrowland. The original stations from the original rides were demolished to fit in one, giant, mega station with multiple ramps for loading in cars. It partially interacts with Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.
