A roller coaster can be divided into segments, of different shapes, called elements. Elements range from simple airtime hills and helices to more advanced shapes, such as vertical loops and cobra rolls. Some elements, called inversions, flip riders upside-down.

The first inverting roller coasters had very distinct and similar elements. However the shapes of inversions on more modern roller coasters are more varied making splitting them up into elements more difficult, and resulting in many one-of-a-kind inversions, including the drachen fire dive drop and demonic knot. Additionally, some invert riders more than once, for example, the cobra roll.
