Atlantis, The Water Kingdom was a water park located in Hollywood, Florida, USA.

History

The park was initially constructed as Atlantis, The Water Kingdom with an expected completion date in October 1982.[1] The owners eventually ran out of funds to finish construction and the site sat abandoned for several months until Bally Manufacturing, the owners of Six Flags, would purchase a 62.2% stake of the site following a lawsuit, forming the joint-venture Six Flags Atlantis Ltd.

The park opened in May 1983 with some of the facilities, while the slides opened the following week.

In 1985, a small selection of dry rides and meet-and-greet opportunities with Looney Tunes characters were added to the site.[2]

In mid-1988, after the new owners of Six Flags put the site up for sale, it gained interest from a development firm called Hollywood Inc., that had an interest in building offices and commercial space on the site and bought it for $16.6 million. In 1989, the development firm hired a third-party company, Florida Recreation, to purchase the slides and to operate the park on a three-year lease. With that, the park was renamed back to its original name of Atlantis, The Water Kingdom. In 1991, the firm announced plans to build a shopping complex called the Oakwood Center on the former site.

On August 20, 1992, the park announced that it would close permanently at the end of the season on the 30th, with the possible chance to find a site to relocate the slides to another site.[3] However, following the 23rd, Hurricane Andrew struck Florida and with at least three of the slides damaged beyond repair.[4] Two months later, the slides that survived the hurricane, alongside other facilities, were sold to other companies and the site was soon cleared out. A new water park was planned, but the city turned down the proposal. The Oakwood Plaza was subsequently constructed and opened two years later.[5]
