History
The Great Six Flags Air Racer was announced on February 3, 1984 with an anticipated May 1984 opening.[1] The ride's opening was delayed when a similar ride at Six Flags Over Georgia, also named Great Six Flags Air Racer, malfunctioned and injured 34 riders.[2] The ride officially opened to the public on June 28, 1984.[3]
Design
The Great Six Flags Air Racer consisted of 12 replicas of old-fashioned biplanes that encircled a 135-foot tower, reaching heights of 90 feet and speeds of 36 mph.[4]
