The Flash: Vertical Velocity is a steel inverted launched shuttle roller coaster located at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, USA. Opened on May 18, 2001, the ride is located in the Yankee Harbor section of the park. It is an Impulse Coaster from Intamin.


The addition of Vertical Velocity was announced in early 2001.[1]

Vertical Velocity opened on May 18, 2001.

In 2004, additional supports were added to both towers to increase stability. In September 2021, Vertical Velocity was closed for the remainder of the year. It was subsequently repainted with red supports.[2][3]

On March 24, 2022, Six Flags Great America announced that Vertical Velocity would be rethemed to The Flash: Vertical Velocity as part of the new DC Universe area.[4]




Single train with 7 cars. Riders are arranged 2 across in 2 rows for a total of 28 riders. Riders are held in by over-the-shoulder harnesses.

Color scheme

Yellow track and red supports. Prior to its repaint in the fall of 2021, the supports were blue.[2]
