Sand Storm was a Round-Up built by US manufacturer Hrubetz previously located at Pleasureland Southport in Southport, Merseyside, England, UK.
History
This attraction was originally introduced to Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1969 and was called Astro Swirl.[1] It was enclosed in a building underneath a perspex dome 70 foot in diameter. For the year 2000, it was renamed Millennium Bug. The ride was listed for sale in early 2003, but it failed to receive any buyers.[2] It closed in 2003. The dome building which housed the ride still exists and is now an amusement arcade.
In 2004, the ride was relocated to sister park Pleasureland Southport where it was renamed Sand Storm to fit in with the park's desert theme. It was repainted to a dark orange colour. It was built on the former site of Himalaya, which was removed after the 2002 season. It would operate until Pleasureland Southport was closed by Blackpool Pleasure Beach on 5 September 2006.
After the park's closure, the ride was purchased and dismantled by The Save Dreamland Campaign in June 2007 along with a few other former rides from the park, being relocated to the site of Dreamland Margate as part of a planned heritage park that was proposed by The Dreamland Trust.[3][4][5] It was subsequently left in storage.
In 2015, an inspection found the ride to be in a very poor state and damaged beyond repair. The ride was never restored and was instead planned for upcycling and theming purposes for Dreamland Margate's reopening in 2015. [6][7]
